Background of the study
Interfaith marriages have become increasingly prevalent in urban settings such as Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos State, reflecting the growing religious diversity of modern society. These unions bring together individuals from different religious backgrounds, creating both opportunities for cultural enrichment and challenges related to differing belief systems. Interfaith marriages can promote broader social integration and foster mutual understanding, yet they may also lead to conflicts over religious practices, child-rearing, and community acceptance (Adeyemi, 2023). As urbanization accelerates, the social dynamics surrounding these marriages have gained renewed academic interest. Recent studies suggest that while interfaith marriages contribute to societal pluralism, they also pose unique challenges that require negotiated compromises (Oluwaseun, 2024). Contemporary research further indicates that the social implications of these unions are multifaceted, influencing identity formation and community relations (Babatunde, 2025). This study examines the various social outcomes of interfaith marriages in Ifako-Ijaiye, assessing both the benefits and the potential tensions that arise from blending different religious traditions.
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing occurrence of interfaith marriages in Ifako-Ijaiye, limited empirical research exists on their social implications. The diversity of religious backgrounds can lead to conflicts over values, practices, and social expectations, which may hinder community cohesion. Inadequate understanding of these dynamics complicates efforts to develop supportive frameworks for couples in interfaith unions. This study addresses the gap by exploring the social consequences of interfaith marriages, with a focus on how religious differences impact identity, family relations, and broader community interactions.
